1. There are no Bad Weeks of College Football
This is something that fans already know. There are no bad weeks of college football. Coming into week 6, there was only one ranked vs. ranked matchup in the sport. From an outsider’s perspective, that is not the greatest week of football. When weeks like this happen, that is exactly when things get wild.
To start in the ranked matchup, Texas A&M destroyed a top 10 team in Missouri. After that, number one ranked Alabama dropped a game to Vanderbilt. At night, no. 4 Tennessee lost to unranked Arkansas. To go with that, no. 10 and 11, Michigan and USC, lost to Washington and Minnesota respectively. Those upsets don’t cover all of what happened in week 6, which shows how good of a week of football it was.
2. Alabama’s Defense has issues
Alabama lost to Vanderbilt, which is something they didn’t do in the Nick Saban era. Their offense played well. The Crimson Tide scored 35 points in only 18 minutes of possession. They had big plays from Ryan Williams and Jalen Milroe, but it wasn’t enough because Vanderbilt’s offense controlled the ball and put up points.
Vanderbilt scored 40 points against Alabama. They have an RPO-heavy offense that can be tough to defend because of the quick decisions that need to be made, but Alabama still should’ve been more prepared. There were missed tackles and assignments, which will need to be cleaned up. In the 12-team College Football Playoff, Alabama is still alive, but another performance like this could really hurt them.
3. Miami is Vulnerable
The last two weeks, Miami has had close calls in ACC games. On Friday in week 5, Miami was losing to Virginia Tech and had to come back and win. They defended a hail mary at the end to seal the game. In week 6, they were down 35-10 to Cal. Cam Ward helped them come back and win the game.
The win helped Miami stay undefeated, but there is definitely some cause for concern. Clemson is playing better and the ACC could be up for grabs between the two. Also if Miami is struggling with Cal and Virginia Tech, they still have some games against similar and better competition down the stretch. Miami needs to fix things and fast.
4. Curt Cignetti is One Best Coaches in the Country
Indiana hired Curt Cignetti from James Madison to take over the program this offseason. Cignetti was taking over a team that went 3-9 last season. He brought in some players from James Madison and changed the culture quickly. The Hoosiers were 5-0 through five games.
In week 6, Indiana became bowl-eligible by beating Northwestern. While the schedule hasn’t been the toughest, in past years Indiana would have a few losses. Indiana is now a real threat in the Big Ten, They are ranked and only have one other ranked team on the schedule: Ohio State. While they may lose some games down the stretch, the quick turnaround at IU was great by Cignetti.
5. Michigan and USC are in Danger of Slipping into Mediocrity
Michigan won the National Championship last season, but things have changed quickly. Plenty of players and staff members have gone to the NFL. After losing to Texas, Michigan lost to Washington this week. With two losses already and more tough games down the stretch, Michigan could have a bad season by their standards. This is made worse by the fact that they can’t find a quarterback to stick with. Rebounding from this season could be tough if the Wolverines don’t figure things out quickly.
USC looked good at the start of the season after beating LSU. Since then, they have lost two games. They lost on the road to an unimpressive Michigan team and then this week they lost to Minnesota. Lincoln Riley’s offense simply hasn’t performed consistently up to expectations. They can right the ship, but it could really take a huge turnaround given that they have a few big games down the stretch.
