It has finally happened, Bryce Harper is signing with the Philadelphia Phillies. It is being reported that it will be $330m for 13 years. It will officially set the record for largest guarantee in MLB history.
The long wait is over as arguably the biggest free agent in recent memory has signed. The Phillies had been saying that they had “stupid money to spend” all offseason and had yet to make the big free agent acquisition to prove it. Now with their major lefty bat starting in right fielder this team will once against be looking to compete in October.
Harper had a down year in hitting for average, .249 but was just fine power wise, 34 homeruns and 100 RBI. This had led to some questions leading into his free agent year as some had originally thought that he would would be receiving closer to $400m.
Either way now that Harper has signed it should hopefully start a domino effect for other free agents who have been struggling to get offers. Some have thought that it might be because everyone was wanting to see where Harper and Machado, who signed earlier this offseason with the Padres, would go.
