All Fortnite players suffer from RNG. The randomizing of loot happens in all battle royale games and is nothing new. Dealing with RNG in scrims is not easy, but there are steps that will help reduce it. In high-level pop-up cups and scrim games, players want to have the best loot for late game. The loot where players land is almost never good. Finding a style of looting that works best for the player is key to reducing RNG.
Landing
Choosing where to land is key for scrims. Landing spots are very high-risk, high reward or low-risk, low reward. Places like Tilted and Retail will give the player all the loot necessary to win if they live. In pop-up cups, which usually turn into scrims, these places also grant lots of kill points. Sticking the landing on a shotgun gives the player an immediate advantage against every enemy there.
Killing an enemy quickly will also award material and shield, putting that player ad a huge advantage. Landing hot drops during scrims will result in these advantages if the player is aggressive early. If poor loot is found, it is best to lay low and look elsewhere. Passive is slower and less action but is the right move in that situation.
Landing at lower risk spots will often allow the player to gather loot and farm materials safely, but will not allow them to get points. Loot at these less popular areas is often not as good. RNG is what influences the loot, so there can be great loot at these locations.
However, most passive locations like Junk Junction or unnamed locations have fewer floor spawns, so chances of finding good loot are smaller. The upside to the more passive areas is that playing for late game is easier and fighting fewer people means you can lay low for the majority of the game.
Mid-Game Rotations
Mid game rotations are based on a variety of things. In scrim and pop-up cup lobbies, rotations mean finding loot, getting to zone, and finding/avoiding fights. For players who like to land hot, chances are they have loot and materials, so getting good zone position is the key. Finding the hill center circle will allow rotations to the next circles without having to go too far. Being in the center of zone also means the next zone is likely to stay on the player’s location, or give them a very short rotation in.
Players who drop more passively will want to work their way to spots that people have likely not touched. Using Junk Junction as an example, players can rotate to the building and race track to the east, then to Motel. Motel offers rifts and lots of metal, so late game resources will be good there. Vending machines also spawn at Motel, so high-level machines are key to things like slurp and jump pads.
Headed south toward Haunted Hills is also a good move since that place is always dead. The castle on the hill provides high ground for players to rotate to if the zone is on that area of the map. There are also lots of woods past Haunted Hills for wood and cover if Pleasant Park is too crowded for the player’s liking.
Late Game
Late game involves a lot of decision making. Players need to be aware of what enemies are doing, where they are, and where the next zone is. Players have lots of decisions to make with all of these variables in scrim situations. For players who have decent loot, taking shots at everyone is a must.
Forcing enemies to use up meds and shields can help late game when enemies run low. Getting shots on as many people as possible also forces them to not edit windows and stay put in the one by one. This lets the player advance towards enemy builds with reduced risk of being shot by that team.
For players who do not have good loot or a lot of ammo, waiting to shoot until rotations is a better bet. Once the storm closes in, these late rotation enemies rush out of their boxes trying to lay low. This is the best time to attack because the storm and the player put pressure from two different sides.
Most players are already rotating so enemy fire from elsewhere is not likely. This lets players get easy kills by zoning and cornering other players. Tunneling towards supply drops is also rewarding if the player can get right under it. Gold loot is dropped from supply drops so if RNG hits hard that particular game, drops are the silver lining. Enemies will target the player under the drop, but using material sparingly is worth it if an RPG or AR drops from the supply crate.
Final Thoughts
RNG is something that cannot be avoided, but taking certain steps can make it easier to deal with. Passive rotations allow better chances for loot since the player is exposed to more chests and floor drops. If a place like Junk Junction has buildings close by, that drop may be considered better over places like Retail Row. The loot is spread further apart but is often uncontested so it is easy to gather.
For the storm, being in the middle of the circle for the first five circles greatly reduces RNG since the rotation to the next zone will be minor if any. While this is not always ideal, being as close to the middle as possible only helps the players chances.
