LSU cornerback Greedy Williams has been one of the best corners in the country and is now skipping the team’s game in the Fiesta Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft.

2018 stats: 33 total tackles, 9 passes defended, 2 interceptions

Size: 6-foot-2, 185 pounds

Williams is a great lockdown corner in college and a lot of his skills will translate to the NFL. Opposing quarterbacks often would avoid throwing to Williams’ side of the field, making it tough to move the ball on LSU’s defense.

In his two seasons, Williams had 71 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 19 passes defended and eight interceptions. He had six interceptions during his redshirt freshman season, which was one of the highest rates in the country. In 2018, teams knew better than to test Williams’ coverage. While he only has two years of starting experience, Williams has proven to be a corner who is capable of making the jump and being productive at the NFL level. After becoming an All-American, Williams has achieved as much as any corner can at the college level.

Because the NFL is such a pass-happy league these days, lockdown corners are a necessity for good defenses. Williams has seen his draft stock fluctuate a little bit, but has always been a first-round pick. As of now, Williams will be selected in the first half of the first round and could be the first corner off the board.

Strengths

Williams has great length and height for a corner, which is now put at a premium in the NFL. In man to man coverage, he mirrors receivers well and stays attached for a decent amount of time. He has enough speed to keep up with his man and can jump a route with his good play recognition. His length enables him to break up a lot of plays and frustrate receivers. He showed excellent ball skills as a freshman, when quarterbacks actually dared to throw at him. As a redshirt sophomore, quarterbacks would avoid throwing in his direction as a result of his great man to man coverage.

While LSU didn’t put him in zone coverage a lot, he played decently when asked. Former LSU corner Donte Jackson made the jump to a zone-heavy team in the Panthers in the NFL and Williams has the tools to be able to do a similar jump.

Weaknesses

If Williams can add more strength, his game would greatly benefit. Adding strength, and better technique would allow him to not get beat when he is in press coverage.

When plays break down, Williams can lose his man, allowing catches. He also doesn’t have the greatest motor, which he will need to improve to reach his full potential.

He is an outside corner and doesn’t offer much in terms of run support. With the NFL game being spread out, it doesn’t matter as much, but Williams is also an inconsistent tackler. If he can become a better tackler, Williams can be more than just a really good cover corner.
