The Minnesota Vikings continue to overhaul their quarterback room. Hours after signing free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins, the Vikings struck a deal with the Denver Broncos to trade Trevor Siemian to Minnesota.
The details
The Vikings will receive a seventh-round pick in this year’s draft along with Siemian. In exchange, Denver will receive a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The move comes shortly after both Denver and Minnesota found their new starting quarterbacks for 2018. The Vikings won the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes, while the Broncos added former Viking Case Keenum. With Paxton Lynch, Siemian and the newly-minted Keenum on the roster, the Broncos found Siemian to be expendable.
Siemian will serve as an experienced backup quarterback in Minnesota behind Cousins.
What the Vikings are getting
After an adequate 2016 season, Trevor Siemian struggled mightily in 2017. Siemian only threw 12 touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions and posted a passer rating under 75.
After the on-the-field struggles, he was benched for backup quarterback Brock Osweiler. With a poor offensive line and running game, Siemian simply made too many mistakes to carry Denver’s offense.
Despite this, he should serve well in a backup role in Minnesota. As we have seen with the Philadelphia Eagles, having an experienced backup quarterback can be vital to saving a team’s season. Siemian’s rookie contract will expire after the 2018 season. Minnesota will likely wait until the end of next season to re-sign Siemian after fully assessing him.
The outlook for Denver
As for the Broncos, their quarterback room is now made up of former journeyman Case Keenum and draft bust Paxton Lynch. Both Keenum and Lynch are average starting quarterbacks in the NFL, leaving room for improvement.
Holding the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Broncos may still select another quarterback to lead their team back to the playoffs.
