According to Riot, the League of Legends ping system is getting revamped in patch 13.19. Their main goal is to curb misuse of the pings, hoping to decrease toxicity within game. To do so, they’re “making scoreboard pings for allies visible only to yourself.”
“Pinging things like “Kha’zix – Alive” 6x can no longer be used to harass teammates. We’re maintaining the allied ping functionality so that you can still see exact allied ult & item cooldowns,” Chris Roberts, Product Lead on the League of Legends, shared on Twitter.
This isn’t the only change they’re implementing. Apparently they’re completely removing the bait ping. Rioter Chris Roberts elaborates on the reasoning behind this decision:
“The bait ping is commonly being used today is unacceptable and we will be removing and replacing it the near future.”
It’s true that the pings are being misused by many players — becoming normalized ways to spread toxicity within game. But on the other hand, these pings were created with a purpose of effective communication with allies. Many non-toxic players claim they use these with their intended objective, and worry that removing this function will hinder effective communication.
It appears Riot is attempting to take a stance against toxicity in the next patch update. They’re even adding more depth to the punishment system — which forces toxic players to play remedial games.
Considering toxicity has been a widespread problem since League of Legends’ initial release, Riot’s attempt to curb toxicity makes tons of sense. But as with every theorized change for the game, only time will tell if these updates will be fruitful. Regardless, seeing Riot attempt to tackle toxicity is great. And even if these methods don’t work, they’re sure to continue various strategies in the future.
