The Red Sox west coast campaign has just ended, playing three series against the San Diego Padres, the LA Angels and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Overall, the Sox went four for five this road trip, a little under .500. This article will recap each series and Boston’s performance in each.
Vs the Padres
The Red Sox were able to get the two-to-one series win over the Padres, winning the first two games six to one and four to two, and losing the last game seven nothing.
In the first game, the dominating win by the Sox came from James Paxton’s and Rafael Devers’s performances. Paxton pitched six innings and struck out five batters. Devers went two for four, and both hits were home runs.
Then, in the second game, the Red Sox got their win through Chris Sale’s pitching performance and Enmanuel Valdez’s three-run home run. Sale pitched seven innings and got eight strikeouts, only giving up two runs. Valdez’s home run in the top of the second inning put the Red Sox ahead, and they held the lead until the end.
However, in the third and final game, the Red Sox got blown out, losing all offensive power and pitching, losing seven to zero. This hitting drought was a forewarning for the next series, against the Angels.
Vs the Angels
The Sox went through a severe hitting drought in this series. In the first game, LA took an early one-run lead and ended up winning two to one.
Then in the second game, The Red Sox lost all offensive traction they had, losing four to nothing.
Finally, in their third game, the Sox scored three runs, but this time Paxton did not dominate, giving up five runs in three innings. He left the mound shortly after, and the Sox relievers had to play damage control, giving three more runs.
Vs the Diamondbacks
In the final series of the Red Sox west coast run, they pulled it together winning the series two games to one.
In the first game, the Sox put on an offensive show, winning the game seven to two. A mix of Triston Casas, Alex Verdugo, and Kike Hernandez led the way for most of the Sox’s runs. Sale’s pitching performance kept the Diamondbacks to one run in five innings.
Then, in the second game, they squeezed out a win two to one, thanks in part to Garrett Whitlock’s pitching performance. In his return game from injury, he gave a run in the first inning, and held the D-backs scoreless for the next four. A mix of pitching from Kutter Crawford, Chris Martin, and a save from Kenley Jansen sealed the game.
The next series for the Sox will start at Fenway on May 30 against the Cincinnati Reds.
