Hall had two incredible seasons over his four seasons as an Auburn Tiger. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As a four-star recruit out of Mississippi, Hall joined Auburn in the class of 2019. He played sparingly as a freshman and racked up 13 total tackles. In his sophomore season, Hall tallied 21 total tackles, four tackles for loss and four sacks. He really stepped up in 2021 with 52 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks. His play helped Auburn go 6-7 that season. For the 2022 season, Hall had 60 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Auburn struggled with a 5-7 record.
After a disappointing team season for Auburn, Hall declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day-two pick.
Derick Hall Strengths
Hall went to Auburn undersized, but really filled out his frame. He is 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds. To go with his size, he has good length. Hall has 34 and 1/2-inch arms. With his size, he has good strength. His strength and length help him shed blocks well. Even though he isn’t the biggest edger rusher, he can overpower bigger players.
He is a good athlete in a few different ways. Hall shows decent burst at the snap of the ball and gets going quickly. His quickness and agility make offensive linemen have to react quickly to stop him. He is able to convert the speed he generates to power, which he can use to win his matchups.
In the NFL, Hall will start his career winning with power. As mentioned, he can convert his speed to power well and is able to push offensive linemen back on their heels. He has a good bull rush and can long-arm offensive linemen to make headway toward the quarterback.
Derick Hall Weaknesses
While he is athletic, Hall doesn’t have great flexibility. He won’t win in the NFL by bending around the edge. That will make him easier for offensive linemen to keep him in front. He could be a candidate to move inside on pass-rushing downs.
He is aggressive in getting after the quarterback, he needs to take that same approach against the run. His motor can wane against the run and he needs to do a better job setting the edge. Currently, he is just a decent run defender, but has plenty of room to improve.
Like several other rushers in this class, Hall needs to add more pass-rush moves to his game. He currently has a predictable pass-rush plan, which can be stopped. Hall can be a more effective pass rusher if he adds to his game.
Projected Draft Round: Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
