The Philadelphia Eagles are looking to improve their receiving core even more this year in the 2022 NFL Draft. Last year, Philadelphia selected Devonta Smith, who ended up being an ultra-successful draft pick. It seems like they are going to select another receiver in the first round of this year’s draft as well. This is not good news for current Eagles player Jalen Reagor as he is about to lose more playing time and could even be traded before the offseason is over. This spotlight will give insight on how Jalen Reagor has panned out so far for the Philadelphia Eagles and what is next for the young receiver.
Reagor’s College Career
Reagor played college ball at TCU from 2017 through 2019. He found a lot of success in college, during his freshmen year as he racked up 576 yards and eight touchdowns. His best year came in 2018, which was his sophomore year. Reagor had over 1,000 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. He also got involved in the running game over that year. He rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Reagor ranked fifth in receptions in the Big 12 that year and seventh in receiving yards within the conference. In 2019, he was not only known as receiver but also as a punt returner on special teams too. He racked 312 return yards and two punt returns for touchdowns. As for receiving that year, he fell off the map a little from his big 2018 season. He had 611 yards and five touchdowns.
His Career with the Eagles
Reagor was drafted in 2020 by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a first-round pick and was selected at 21st overall. His college career has not translated to a good NFL career thus far. Reagor has athleticism and speed, but he just makes a lot of mental errors on the field. For example, he is prone to dropping passes and even fumbling the ball sometimes. He has also not been all that great at punt returns either in the NFL. He racked up 227 yards in returns but has no touchdowns to show for it this past season. The yardage amount is a bit surprising as it seemed he was doing less during the season.
Philadelphia had pretty high hopes for him coming out of college and being a first-round draft pick. They expected him to produce right off the bat and be a force to be reckoned with in the NFL. Instead, the Eagles got the opposite. Reagor during his first season in the NFL racked up 396 yards and one touchdown. This was not what the Eagles wanted from his first year, but the NFL takes time to adjust. This was not completely worrisome. However, he should have improved during his second season which he did not. He only had 299 yards and two touchdowns in 2021 which was disappointing. It also may affect his future in Philly as we move along in the off season.
What is next for Jalen Reagor
There are a couple of things the Eagles can do with Reagor. One option and the least popular with Eagles fans is to keep him on the roster. The logic in this is that he has only played two seasons which is a small a sample size. There is always a possibility he finds his groove and becomes a solid receiver in 2022. However, if he does not pan out during the 2022 season then he can always be traded during the season or next offseason.
Another option would be to trade him during the offseason this year. The Eagles could get some solid draft picks out of trading him. They could even add him to a trade deal that could get Philadelphia that big receiver they want. Either way it will be interesting to see what the Eagles do with him as we inch our way to the 2022 NFL season. This concludes this spotlight on Philadelphia Eagles receiver Jalen Reagor.
