The 2022 NFL Draft begins on April 28, which means that The Game Haus will be debuting draft profiles for every team. Each NFL team will be evaluated heading into this year’s draft, as our staff recaps their last season, highlights their needs and pinpoints their potential 2022 NFL Draft targets. The Washington Commanders are the subject of today’s 2022 NFL Draft profile.
Summary
2021 was Washington’s last season with the “Football Team” moniker, as they changed their branding. They missed the playoffs with a 7-10 record, which was only good enough for third in the NFC East. This was a step down from 2020, in which they took the NFC East crown and nearly knocked off Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round.
They lost Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff, but picked up Carson Wentz in an attempt to upgrade the quarterback position. The Commanders need plenty of help in Ron Rivera’s third season as head coach. But, their division is still very winnable with their current roster.
2022 NFL Picks
Washington will have two picks to use in the first three rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft.
First Round (one pick): No. 11
Second Round (one pick): No. 47
Team needs
Wide receiver- Terry McLaurin is a fantastic piece, but the Commanders need a WR2 to really make a push for the NFC East crown.
Tight end- Logan Thomas is injured and Ricky Seals-Jones left the team in free agency. This team needs more pass-catching talent.
Offensive line- After Brandon Scherff moved teams, the Commanders could use some interior offensive line protection. No team can ever have enough offensive linemen, especially if they can play multiple positions.
Defense- There are multiple needs on the defensive side of the ball. This includes, cornerback, inside linebacker and safeties.
2022 Draft Targets
First Round:
Pick No. 11: Derek Stingley, Jr., CB, LSU
Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner would be the dream pick here, but he will almost certainly be gone by pick number 11. Wide receiver Garret Wilson may also be available here, and would be a good pick. But there is lots of depth at the receiver position in this draft, so they may want to wait.
Despite less-than-eye-popping statistics, Stingley is one of the most highly-touted defensive prospects in this draft. His best year came in 2019, in which he collected six interceptions. He is a true cover corner that fits Rivera’s defensive style. If any team can get the most out of him, it’s the Commanders.
Second Round:
Pick No. 47: Skyy Moore, WR, Western Michigan
Skyy Moore has been climbing up draft boards in the offseason. He may have been seen as a reach here pre-combine, but picking him here might be seen as good value by the time the draft rolls around. In 2021, Moore had 95 receptions for 1,292 yards and 10 touchdowns. This was a far cry from his 2019 and 2020 seasons, in which he had three touchdowns. He has plenty of upside, and will compliment McLaurin well.
