Texas Tech has decided to fire head football coach Matt Wells according to Mac Engel of the Star-Telegram.
Only the timing is a surprise – Texas Tech is done with Matt Wells. #gunsup https://t.co/YVenlwuNI9

Wells was hired at Texas Tech after his time at Utah State. In six seasons at Utah State he had two 10-win seasons. So far at Texas Tech, Wells has a record of 13-17.
The timing of the firing was interesting, as the Red Raiders are 5-3 on the season. They did, however, blow an early lead to Kansas State on Saturday. Wells didn’t make a bowl game at Texas Tech, but they did need just one more win to become bowl-eligible.
Sonny Cumbie will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
