The 2021 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Tyson Campbell 2021 NFL Draft Profile.
Tyson Campbell Background
Position: Cornerback
Size: 6-foot-2, 185 pounds
Class: Junior
2020 stats: 29 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 5 passes defended
Campbell is one of the few players who played very early in his career and started for three years in all of college football. After getting plenty of reps in his Georgia career, he has declared for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Out of high school, Campbell was a U.S. Army All-American who chose to leave his home state of Florida to play for the Bulldogs at Georgia. He immediately saw action, starting in 11 games as a freshman with 45 total tackles, one pass defended and a touchdown. The Bulldogs went 11-3, but lost the Sugar Bowl to end the season. As a sophomore, Campbell played in nine games with 15 total tackles, one sack and four passes defended. Georgia won 12 games including the Sugar Bowl that season. For 2020, Campbell had 29 tackles, five passes defended and one interception. Campbell helped the Bulldogs win eight of their 10 games and finished the year off with a win in the Peach Bowl.
After starting for three seasons, Campbell decided it was time to play in the NFL. He is a projected first or second round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Strengths
Campbell’s height and length is unique for the cornerback position. At 6-foot-2, he will be able to matchup with bigger receivers on the outside. His length will allow him to be disruptive, both at the start of the rep and at the catch point. This helps make him a valuable player for teams running just about any scheme.
To go along with his height and length, Campbell has great speed and movement skills. He is able to mirror receivers well because he can match how they move. Campbell has loose hips and can change direction well too. He also has the longspeed, with long strides, that helps him take on receivers who challenge him deep.
Because of both of his height, speed and length, Campbell is a candidate to play in both man and zone schemes. He has experience playing a lot of both man and zone coverage in college. Campbell has the ability to stick to his man if asked, but also has the length and traits to play zone coverage if asked.
Weaknesses
Ball skills are Campbell’s biggest weakness. He had just one interception in his career at Georgia and really didn’t have many passes defended either. Campbell needs to react quicker to balls thrown in his direction and make plays on the ball. He has all of the traits to be able to do so, but hasn’t been able to prove that he can in college.
His awareness needs to improve. There are times where he doesn’t recognize a wide receiver is trying to set him up with a route. This really hurts him in zone coverage, as offenses can take advantage of his misreads. If he can process faster, it should really help him out in these areas, as well as with his ball skills.
Campbell needs to fill out his frame for the next level. He is very skinny at 185 pounds. While he doesn’t have any qualms about hitting people, the added weight will make him more durable. It will also help him be more disruptive in press coverage, shedding blocks and to be more physical at the catch point.
Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick-Second Round Pick
