During the Season 2021 Opening Day stream, Riot unveiled plenty of new content and plans for the year. The Legends of Runeterra team mentioned their plans to continue to release new regions and champions through the year. Kicking things off in February, Legends of Runeterra will welcome Aphelios as it’s latest Champion.
Aphelios is a champion from Targon, that utilizes the Nightfall keyword to select a form for his weapon. Each form has different keywords and abilities for Aphelios to dictate the match. Once Aphelios summons each weapon he levels up. Aphelios appears to be a character based around reactive plays and adjusting to handle each new play from the opponent.

As a champion from Mount Targon, Aphelios looks to pair well with some of the other Nightfall cards. Diana looks to be a strong bet as a co-champion, as both look to be early game beaters that can power up as the game drags on. Or Aphelios can join Leona in a Nightfall/Daybreak style tempo game. While the leveled-up version of Aphelios is still unknown, players can bet that it will grant him access to each weapon at will.
Players will have to only speculate what could work with Aphelios, as he won’t join the game until February. Per the 2021 Roadmap, Aphelios will join the game early in the year right before Shurima is released as the latest region. Together, these two new additions to the game are shaping up to give Legends of Runeterra a fresh new experience.
