Contract negotiations broke off between Alex Pietrangelo and the St Louis Blues which means Pietrangelo is almost certainly going to leave to leave the Blues and enter the free agency market.
The Blues’ captain had just led them to the Stanley Cup in 2019 and became a free agent in 2020. Pietrangelo was making $6.5 million a year and expected a huge pay day around $8-9 million a year. However, with the flat cap and the Blues being very tight on cap space, the Blues were hesitant to give the 30-year-old defenseman $8.5 million for seven years deal. Instead they low-balled Pietrangelo offering him about $7-7.5 million.
Obviously, Pietraneglo was very disappointed by the contract talks and the Blues advised him to pursue unrestricted free agency. This offseason, Pietrangelo is going to be one of the biggest players on the market and a ton of teams are interested in signing him. The Maple Leafs, Avalanche and Jets are leading contenders to sign Pietrangelo in October when free agency begins.
