Releasing him before 4 p.m EST means that the Rams will not owe the $10.5 million guaranteed in his contract. Along with this, the Rams released Clay Matthews.
Gurley is a three-time Pro Bowler who is just 25 years old, but he has slowed down over the last year and a half with arthritis in his knee. He has rushed for 5,404 yards and 58 touchdowns in his career. Last season, he rushed for 857 yards, the lowest mark of his career.
The Rams will need to address the running back position, but have saved a lot of money owed to a running back that has a medical issue.
In the other move the Rams made, Matthews was cut. He played one season for the Rams and totaled eight sacks. He signed a two-year deal with the team last offseason.
