The Cincinnati Bengals intend to use their franchise tag on wide receiver A.J. Green. After missing the entirety of the 2019 season, Green was set to become a free agent. Instead, the Bengals will attempt to sign him to a franchise tag, whether or not he extends past the 2020 season.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the news on Monday via Twitter.
The Bengals currently plan to franchise tag wide receiver A.J. Green, as they want him in Cincinnati in 2020 either through the tag or a longer deal, sources told @DanGrazianoESPN and me. A good selling point for the team's No. 1 pick.

Green suffered a torn ligament in his ankle on the first day of training camp in 2019. He was expected to only miss a few games. He was placed on injured reserve in December of 2019, essentially ending his season. Green did not take a single snap last season.
A bona fide star on the Bengals offense, Green has totaled over 1,000 yards in each season he has played in at least 11 games. He also has had three double-digit touchdown seasons. A seven-time selection, the receiver has only missed the Pro Bowl in one year in which he played (2018).
According to CBS Sports, the likely number one overall pick, Joe Burrow, has made it clear he wanted the Bengals to keep Green. The 2020 NFL Draft begins on April 23, which is when NFL fans will know for sure whether or not Cincinnati plans to take Burrow.
