Arsenal Beat Tottenham 3-2

Publish Date: April 29, 2024

Arsenal beat Tottenham 3-2 in an exciting edition of the North London Derby, inching closer to a possible Premier League Title.

Arsenal vs. Tottenham

While the Gunners only had 37% of the possession, they took the lead when Pierre Emile Hojbjerg deflected a Bukayo Saka corner into his net in the 15th minute.

Spurs then nearly drew level four minutes later, when defender Cristian Romero fired a header onto the post from a good cross by James Maddison. In the 22nd minute, Spurs thought their control of the match paid off. Defender Micky van de Ven fired past Raya from inside the box, after series of deflections following a long shot from fullback Pedro Porro. VAR intervened however, and judged that van de Ven was offside, disallowing the goal.

Arsenal would then double their advantage in the 25th minute, after a slick counter attack. Arsenal won the ball on the edge of their own box, and found Kai Havertz in acres of space in his own half. This allowed Havertz to send a long ball to Saka running towards goal, who then placed a clinical finish past Spurs’ Guglielmo Vicario. Spurs players protested, as they felt they should have been awarded a penalty right before Arsenal regained possession to start this counter-attack.

Arsenal then rubbed salt in the wound when Havertz scored from a corner in the 38th minute. Havertz was unmarked four yards away from goal when he headed from Declan Rice’s inch perfect corner delivery.

In the second half, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya gave Spurs a lifeline. He gave the ball away to Cristian Romero on the edge of the box, allowing Romero to score quickly, bringing the score to 3-1 in the 64th minute. Spurs continued to claw back into the match, as Son Heung-min scored a penalty in the 87th minute, bringing the final score to 3-2.
