Reports are coming out that Eliah Drinkwitz will be the next head coach for the Missouri Tigers. Former head coach Barry Odom was fired two weeks ago following a 6-6 season.
What Drinkwitz Brings
Drinkwitz is one of the exciting young names in the college football coaching carousel. His head coaching experience is limited, yes, but he was a close loss away from taking Appalachian State to their first perfect season in program history. They hold wins over power five teams North Carolina and South Carolina.
The Mountaineers dominated most of their conference championship game Saturday against Louisiana. They entered the weekend No.11 in total offense, averaging 38.9 points per game, good for the best in the Sun Belt.
Drinkwitz is an offensive savant. His air raid offense has been successful not only at Appalachian State but also at Boise State and North Carolina State where he was offensive coordinator. His lone experience in the SEC came in 2010 as Auburn’s National Championship team’s quality control coach.
Another plus for Missouri is that Drinkwitz is extremely familiar with the area. He grew up, went to school, and has coached in the state of Arkansas. Being familiar with the region will help with recruiting as well as gaining fan favor.
What He Inherits
The Missouri program isn’t in jeopardy but isn’t in the greatest spots either. The last three years have been 7-6, 8-5, and 6-6. This season is absent of a bowl game due to the NCAA postseason ban due to a rogue tutor.
The good news on that is that the Tigers have something to play for next season. He’ll need to replace senior transfer quarterback Kelly Bryant. His leading target Jonathan Nance will also be graduating. He inherits a formidable defense that looks to improve in 2020.
