Matheny was the manager for the St. Louis Cardinals for six and a half seasons from 2012 to 2018. He posted a 591-474 record with the team, his only managerial experience of his career. The Cardinals did win the National League in 2013, but failed to take home the World Series.
The new manager will take over a club that went 59-103 last season, finishing fourth in the American League Central. Ned Yost retired as manager following the season.
