The UFC finished off the 2023 year with one of the more exciting cards that we’ve seen. Welterweight champion, Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards and former welterweight interim champion, Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington headlined UFC 296. It was one of those matches that fans were desperately waiting to see. While the anticipation for that fight had grown exponentially, it wasn’t Edwards nor Covington who stole the show that night. It was featherweight contender, Josh Emmett.
Emmett and Giga Chikadze were originally scheduled to fight, but Giga was forced to step out due to a serious groin injury. That’s when fan favorite, Bryce Mitchell stepped in on short notice to take the fight. Despite taking the bout on short notice, Mitchell was the favorite before the fight. However, that clearly wasn’t a factor for Josh Emmett. Emmett delivered one of the more brutal knockouts of the entire year. Putting Mitchell fast asleep with just under two minutes in the very first round.
After his bonus-winning knockout of Bryce Mitchell in December, Emmett went on the JAXXSON podcast. He spoke about one of the topics, which was who he would like to see next in the octagon.
Who Does Josh Emmett Want to Fight Next?
Emmett exclaims, “In my opinion, the clearest shot to the title It’d be the toughest fight as well. Give me Max Holloway. He’s the number one contender.” Max Holloway is without a doubt the number one contender, as Emmett stated. The former UFC featherweight champions last fight came against one of the legends of the sport, Chan Sung Jung. Holloway won the fight in brutal fashion, just as Emmett did in his last fight. Aside from both fighters coming off of tremendous wins, Holloway has fought just about everyone in the division except for Josh Emmett. Holloway hasn’t responded to any of Emmett’s comments, but it’d be difficult not seeing these two standing across from one another in the octagon this year.
