The 2022-23 NFL season is about to begin which means that fantasy football is back! Usually in the first week of the season fantasy football players tend to play the players they originally drafted to be their starters. However, since every week is important it would be irresponsible to start a player with a rough matchup over a player with a more favorable one because he was drafted to be a starter. Here are the fantasy football tight end rankings for Week 1.
*Ratings are subject to change due to injury reports or possible move to reserve/COVID-19 list*
(Check out the section below for details on players already rumored to possibly miss this week and how their replacement options rank for the week)
Key:
Must Start- a player who is in your lineup regardless of the matchup or most circumstances. They Will likely finish near the top of the league in points that week and in most weeks.
Starting TE1- a player who makes fantasy owners comfortable starting week after week. Regardless of the matchup, this player has a solid floor.
TD Dependent Starter- a player who may not be a lock to start for a team every week, but will start more times than not because of depth at the position. Their production is based on whether they can get in the end zone or not. It can be the difference between a top 10 performance or top 25 performance
Deep League Starter- a player whose ceiling isn’t high but should put up enough production to be started in deep leagues. When a player like this is started it is because their production though it will likely be low, will be better than a few options.
Leave on the Bench- a player who should be avoided in all lineups that week. Many times this player could even be left on waivers.

Possible Changes that can occur before Sunday
TE5 Darren Waller, Las Vegas Raiders
Darren Waller has missed a majority of the preseason due to a hamstring injury and ongoing contract negotiations. If Waller was to miss Las Vegas’ season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers then Foster Moreau would move up to TE16 between Albert Okwegbunam and Tyler Higbee.
TE9 Zach Ertz, Arizona Cardinals
Zach Ertz could possibly miss Week 1 with a calf injury. If he was to miss the first game of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs then rookie Trey McBride would become TE22 between Logan Thomas and Mo Alie-Cox.
TE18 Irv Smith Jr., Minnesota Vikings
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell feels confident that Irv Smith Jr.’s thumb will heal in time for him to play in the Vikings’ season opener against the Green Bay Packers. if Smith Jr. cannot play then Johnny Mundt would slot in at TE40 for the week under O.J. Howard.
TE21 Robert Tonyan, Green Bay Packers
It is unclear at this point that Robert Tonyan will be ready to begin the season against the Minnesota Vikings. His season was cut short last year due to a torn ACL if Tonyan could not play this week then Marcedes Lewis slots in at TE34 between Isaiah Likely and Jonnu Smith.
TE22 Logan Thomas, Washington Commanders
At this point, Logan Thomas is unsure if he will be able to play Sunday against the New York Giants in Washington’s season opener. Thomas is still recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered last season. If he cannot play John Bates will slot in at TE28 between Cameron Brate and Taysom Hill.
TE36 Daniel Bellinger, New York Giants
Rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger is still recovering from a concussion. If Bellinger cannot play this week against the Tennessee Titans then Tanner Hudson will slot in at TE 40 below O.J. Howard.
