The New Jersey Devils extended impending RFA winger Timo Meier to an 8-year, $8.8 million AAV contract on Wednesday.
TSN’s Pierre LeBrun was first with the news.
Meier was traded to the Devils at the 2023 trade deadline. He scored 9 goals and assisted on 5 for 14 points in the 21 regular season games he played for the team. The 9 goals he scored were also good enough to tie the team lead during that stretch. His regular season totals were 40 goals and 26 assists for 66 points in 78 games.
He did have a lackluster playoff showing, with only 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points in 11 games. However, his xGF% was 57.19%, good enough for 3rd among Devils with at least 60 minutes of ice time.
Timo Meier getting a new contract signals once again that this team is built to last. Four members of the Devils’ top-6 have deals that last for 4 more years at the very least. Those players are also being paid less than $9 million a year. In a league with a hard salary cap, GM Tom Fitzgerald has managed this core brilliantly.
The Devils still have $10 million in cap space this offseason to make moves in the upcoming unrestricted free agency cycle.
