Reliever David Robertson and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a two-year contract worth $23 million earlier today. The contract also includes a club option for 2021 worth $12 million or a $2 million buy out.
Last year with the New York Yankees, Robertson went 8-3 with five saves, 91 strikeouts and finished with a 3.23 ERA.
Robertson has spent most of his career with the Yankees where has been used as a late-game reliever and occasionally a closer. In 2014, the lone season he was a closer for the Yankees, he finished with 39 saves.
From 2014-2016, Robertson recorded 110 saves with the Yankees and Chicago White Sox. He will finally have a chance to return to the closer role. The Phillies plan to have Robertson and reliever Seranthony Dominguez split ninth-inning duties. Because he played his entire career in the American League, he has a small sample size against the NL East. Robertson will be joining one of the most competitive divisions in baseball.
Last year lefties hit only .176 against him whereas righties were only able to hit .188. The Phillies paid the 33-year-old well hoping he can continue his success.
The Yankees were unable to resign Robertson and will turn their eyes to resigning Zach Britton. With this move, the Phillies have a capable reliever of locking down the ninth inning or coming in and facing the most dangerous hitters of any lineup.
