Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich has won the NL MVP award as announced on Thursday night. He beat out Javier Baez and Nolan Arenado for the award.
The Brewers acquired Yelich via a trade with the Miami Marlins, who started their rebuild. Yelich elevated his level of play this year, batting .326 with 36 home runs and 110 RBIs. The highest average Yelich had before this season was .300 back in 2015.
Yelich was a huge part of the Brewers’ run to the playoffs in 2018. The Brewers played the Cubs in a game 163 to decide who won the NL Central. Milwaukee won that game, which set them up for a matchup with the winner of the Wild Card Game, the Colorado Rockies. While the Brew Crew won that series, they lost in the NLCS to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 26-year-old is under contract with the Brewers until at least through 2021, but won’t become an unrestricted free agent until 2023.
