The final matches of the Uefa Champions League Group Stage are this week. Across Tuesday and Wednesday, Matchday 6 will take place across Europe. With knockout stage spots still on the line for a few clubs, the last group stage fixtures are sure to bring drama. As it moves closer to our final 16 clubs, here is a look at the most important and intriguing matches. Here are UCL Matchday 6: Most Important Fixtures.
Tottenham Hotspur @ Marseille FC, Group D
Reverse Fixture: 2-0 Spurs
English-side Spurs will travel to Stade Velodrome on Tuesday and need at least a point to qualify out of the group. For home side Marseille, a win is necessary to clinch a knockout stage spot. Tottenham won the first match between the clubs in MD1, 2-0. Group D is without a doubt the most interesting going into the 6th matchday, as both spots are still up for grabs. Antonio Conte’s men are the favorites to get out of the group, but Spurs have never won in a European competition in France. With that said, Marseille are winless in their last nine UCL games against an English side. History will not be on the side of either club in this match taking place in the south of France.
Kickoff is Tuesday at 4pm EST.
Eintracht Frankfurt @ Sporting CP, Group D
Reverse Fixture: 3-0 Sporting
The second match of Group D has massive knockout stage implications, also. Frankfurt will travel to Portugal to take on Sporting. A win for either club would guarantee them qualification out of the group. A draw could cause potential mayhem, as multiple clubs could end on 8 points in the table. For the German side, a 3-0 loss in the result fixture will be at the forefront of their minds. Primeira Liga’s Sporting is looking to get through to the knockout rounds in consecutive UCL campaigns.
Kickoff is Tuesday at 4pm EST.
RB Salzburg @ AC Milan, Group E
Reverse Fixture: 1-1
This could easily be the most exciting matchup on paper heading into Matchday 6. RB Salzburg will travel to San Siro needing a win to clinch a spot in the knockout stages. They will need to create history to advance as AC Milan have never lost in a European competition at home against an Austrian side. Milan will most certainly get a boost from the home supporters as they only need a draw to get through the group. This fixture on Matchday 1 was very tight and there was nothing to break the two sides.
Kickoff is Wednesday at 4pm EST.
RB Leipzig @ Shakhtar Donetsk, Group F
Reverse Fixture: 4-1 Donetsk
Group F has gone the way many predicted, Real Madrid to win the group and
RB Leipzig to finish 2nd. As of right now, that stands true but, Shakhtar Donetsk have the chance to change that. RB Leipzig only need a draw to see themselves through to the knockout stage, but a Shakhtar Donetsk win would put the Ukrainian-side through on goal differential. After recently beating Real Madrid, RB Leipzig are currently in fine form. That does not bode well for Shakhtar who will not get a true home advantage, either. The ongoing Russian-Ukraine war has displaced Shakhtar from their usual home in Donetsk. This match will be played in Warsaw, Poland. German-side Leipzig will technically have more of a home-field advantage as the city of Leipzig (Germany) is much closer to Warsaw than Donetsk (Ukraine)
Kickoff is Wednesday at 1:45pm EST.
Napoli @ Liverpool, Group A
Reverse Fixture: 4-1 Napoli
This match is the only one in this list that does not truly have anything to play for, but both clubs have narratives they are looking to continue, and break. For the traveling side, Napoli, a trip to Liverpool on Tuesday will be yet another attempt for them to continue their astounding form. Across all competitions this season Napoli are unbeaten, they have undoubtedly been one of the top sides in the world. Having already essentially clinched the group over Liverpool because of a big goal differential, the blues of Italy will travel to northwest England looking to go for their 6th win out of 6 in the group stage. For the host side, Liverpool, their form has been quite the opposite. Other than a 4-1 abysmal defeat at Napoli in matchday 1, the Reds have looked pretty good in the UCL. But, their problems in the English Premier League have been like nothing we have seen since the beginning of the Jurgen Klopp era. After a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Leeds on Saturday, Klopp and his men will welcome Napoli to Anfield where they look to right the ship in front of their supporters. This fixture has the potential for fireworks written all over it
Kickoff is Tuesday at 4pm EST.
