It seems as though the Pokemon company really wants Diglett to be more popular. While clearly not just a regional form, Wiglett seems to be related to Diglett in some capacity. This was shown in a strange fashion, as if people in the Pokemon world were discovering it for the first time. With that, here is a look into Wiglett in Pokemon Scarlett and Violet.

Diglett was originally a first-generation Pokemon. It was in a specific cave and was just a ground Pokemon for a long time. It also evolved into Dugtrio, which is essentially three Digletts combined together. Then in Pokemon Sun and Moon, Diglett and Dugtrio received a regional variety called an Alolan form. This gave them some blonde hair and turned them into Ground and Steel type Pokemon.
Now, it would seem that Wiglett is in a sense its own Pokemon, at least according to the video below.
As they state in the video, Wiglett and Diglett look very similar. Their noses, eyes and general shapes are the same. But, their bodies and the placement of said features, one on the side and the other on top, seem to be different. Also, they are near water. This would be problematic for Diglett normally.
Instead, this seems to insinuate that what was leaked about a water-form Diglett is true. Whether Wiglett will have a Dugtrio evolution or something completely different is currently unknown. There is even a chance that it does not have another evolution at all.
Regardless, Pokemon Scarlett and Violet continue to bring forward new and innovative Pokemon. Hopefully, more will be learned about Wiglett soon.
