The 2023 Barracuda Championship is a co-sanctioned tournament that is being presented by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. The event will take place at Tahoe Mountain Club (Old Greenwood) in Truckee, CA. This course features a par-71 track that comes in on the longer side at 7,480 yards. A $3,800,000 purse and up to 300 FedExCup points are on the line for the competitors.
This tournament is the only event on the PGA Tour that uses the Modified Stableford scoring format. Despite how we understand the regular stroke play format, the winner of the Stableford format is the golfer who has the highest score. Points are given for solid play and are taken away for poor play. For example, eight points are awarded for a double eagle, five for an eagle, two for a birdie and zero for a par. Points are deducted for bogeys or worse.
At last year’s Barracuda Championship, Chez Reavie emerged as the victor after earning 43 points. Reavie narrowly defeated Alex Noren who finished with 42 points. Noren put together a 14-point final round but fell just short. Despite their best efforts, the rest of the field was a ways behind. The next closest golfer was Martin Laird, who finished in third place with 38 points.
The Barracuda Championship took to Twitter to build excitement for its event.
Players to watch
Keith Mitchell – Seeking his first victory since the 2018-19 season Mitchell has a lot to gain. He boasts four top-ten finishes so far this season and is the highest-ranked golfer that will be competing. Although he has slowed down during his past few outings, he is looking to bounce back in Tahoe.
Justin Suh – Despite suffering through a difficult start to the season, Suh has been finding some consistency as of late. After missing the cut at the 2022 Barracuda Championship, Suh is looking to get his revenge on the mountain course and earn the first victory of his PGA Tour career.
Chez Reavie – The defending champion is currently playing his best golf of the season. A top-five finish at the Travelers Championship was followed by two more decent performances at the RMC and John Deere Classic. After a narrow victory last year, Reavie hopes to take advantage of the unique scoring format and hoist the trophy yet again.
