After carding four rounds of 68-strokes or better, Lucas Glover has won the 2023 Wyndham Championship. This effort earned Glover the fifth win of his 22-year PGA Tour career. The 43-year-old recorded a 20-under 260 and is taking home a $1.4 million share of the purse.
Despite putting together a season full of ups and downs, Lucas Glover managed to fight his way into the FedExCup playoffs. This victory catapulted Glover from 112th to 49th in the standings. He currently is in a position to qualify for the BMW Championship.
With the BMW Championship coming up after this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, Lucas Glover will have the opportunity to improve his rank further. From this Thursday forward, the competition will be more fierce than it has been all year long. The race to the Tour Championship is on.
The PGA Tour shared Glover’s final putt on Twitter.
Tournament Recap
Russell Henley kicked off his tournament by posting a 62-under par. This round would eventually tie three other golfers for the lowest of the tournament. After nearly playing four outstanding rounds, Henley posted three consecutive bogeys to end his tournament. Because of this, he finished tied for second place at 18-under 262.
Lucas Glover managed to become one of the few golfers to record a 62-under par. His third round saw him drain nine birdies and give up one bogey on the par-3 seventh hole. Despite a rain delay during the final round, Glover went on to win the tournament by two strokes.
After an impressive first three rounds, the wheels fell off for Billy Horschel on Sunday. Horschel carded a 62 and 63-under par during rounds two and three. Despite being in striking distance of the lead, he posted a 2-over 72 during the fourth round. This performance saw him end the tournament in solo fourth place.
Despite his best efforts during the regular season finale, Justin Thomas will not be playing in the FedExCup playoffs. Over the past few months, JT has tried several things in order to acquire some extra FedExCup points. Playing in extra events, changing putters and taxing himself mentally did not dish out the results that he desired. After a wicked birdie chip on his final hole of the tournament deflected off of the flagstick, Thomas has missed the playoffs by one stroke.
When is the next tournament?
The regular season of the PGA Tour has ended. The next event on TOUR marks the beginning of the FedExCup playoffs. The top 70 highest-ranked professionals will attend the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, TN. This event features a $20 million purse.
Last season, Will Zalatoris earned the first win of his PGA Tour career at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Zalatoris shot a 15-under 265 and took home a career-high $2.7 million share of the purse. This year, Will Zalatoris will not have the opportunity to defend his title. The 26-year-old is currently recovering from a back surgery that he underwent earlier this year.
The FedEx St. Jude Championship will be available for streaming on Golf Channel. CBS will provide additional weekend coverage.
