The offseason for the Overwatch League is essentially over in terms of building teams with only some smaller moves to be made. With the 2020 season-ending in October though, it feels like this offseason has dragged on quite a bit. Many may be wondering when what has ultimately been a very long offseason will be coming to an end? Here is a look at when the Overwatch League 2021 Season should be starting.

Normally the Overwatch League has started sometime near the end of January or in February. They have then played until September or October. This has lead to people criticizing the League for being too long while others have enjoyed having Overwatch throughout most of the year. After a 2020 that saw a downturn in viewership that was due to a mixture of COVID related issues and meta problems, the Overwatch League was certainly due for a change. The problem is that many did not see what was coming as is outlined in the video below.
In this official update, Jon Spector, announces that the Overwatch League 2021 start date will be sometime in April. There were no specific dates discussed but there sure was a lot of speculation as to why they were waiting so long.
Many believe that this push back is due to Overwatch 2 hopefully coming out within that timeframe. The only issue is that there are currently rumors that OW2 may be delayed as much as until 2022. If the Overwatch League had moved its season back for the new game only for it to be delayed then a League that has suffered as many PR fails as this one would just have to survive another punch to the gut.
The more likely reason is that they wanted to have a shorter season. Considering the League has had so many more games than what is currently scheduled, this option seems more likely. In this scenario, the League gets to have their four tournaments and then an official playoffs while still having a shorter season. Some fans will like this while others will be dissapointed, especially if their team is not expected to do well since they won’t likely make the tournaments.
Either way the season is on its way, just not as quickly as many people were hoping for.
