With the release of Echo, Jeff Kaplan confirmed that she would be the last hero in the initial game of Overwatch. That means that the next hero coming out will be arriving when Overwatch 2 is released. While the release date is not yet revealed, most people believe that it will be sometime in 2020. The latest date that many hope for is Holiday season 2020. Unfortunately, COVID-19 is wreaking havoc on plans and video game companies like Blizzard and not unaffected. Either way, the roster of heroes for Overwatch 2 will be something that is highly speculated.
Apparently the Overwatch team see their game as something that will follow an Avengers type storyline. For those who may not be familiar, The Avengers movies follow this type of storyline.
- They introduce many of the heroes in their stand-alone movies.
- The heroes are brought together due to a smaller threat that is part of an overarching one.
- The heroes continue to grow their ranks and fight other major threats that test the team and cause them to split into two.
- The teams again grow as they are separated and come to a head fighting one another.
- They reconcile because of a bigger threat and have to defeat.
- Lastly, there is a major battle where they finally defeat the major threat.
While in the comics, this type of threat continues to happen, the movies that the OW team are referring to have only gone through those six or so stages. If Overwatch is following a similar path then they are currently in the middle of the first or nearing the beginning of the second. Overwatch 2 has already shown that the Omnic crisis is not totally over and that it was good that Winston started to get the team back together in Overwatch 1. Where the potential plot of OW2 will go is a mystery currently. What is known is that this is the perfect time to have the team grow. If it is following the Avengers storyline then OW2 will likely be either the combination of points two and three or two through four. With that in mind, here are the heroes that have already been confirmed and with it, some that could make it in.
Already Confirmed Heroes
Keep in mind that all of the heroes already in Overwatch will be in Overwatch 2 even if they have not been “officially” confirmed yet due to the fact that PVP will be crossplay between OW1 and OW2.

Potential Heroes Coming to Overwatch 2
These are characters who have been mentioned in a way that might see them get added to the roster when Overwatch 2 comes out.
- Mauga- Was revealed that he was supposed to be hero 31 and then was reworked into Sigma. Most likely will find his way into Overwatch 2.
- Junker Queen- Has been theorized for a long time. She seems like someone who could have a role in Overwatch eventually.
- Maximilien- He is the leader of Talon and an Omnic. While no abilities have been seen it feels like he could make for an interesting addition.
- Sven- He is the rival/villain of Torbjorn in the comics and seems like someone who could have joined Talon.
- Dr. Winston- While the lore currently has him as dead, it is possible that he made it out. Could he become a villain instead of the hero Winston knows him as.
- Sanjay- As the previous superior to Symmetra it seems possible that someone else from her field or line or work could make it into the game. This would give fans more on story to this area as well.
- D.Mon, Overlord, Casino and King- These are the rest of D.Va’s MEKO group and adding them would be outstanding. Their mechs have already been shown, so why not get them in the game?
While there are other characters who are named, these seem most likely to be added. The original game launched with 21 different heroes. With the noticeable absence of heroes in the past year, the hope is that the Overwatch team and Jeff Kaplan have been hard at work to bring the fans new playable heroes. Will Overwatch 2 drop 20+ new heroes, doubtful, but it would definitely be welcome. What seems more likely is that including Sojourn it will launch with anywhere from four to ten new heroes with more planning on being released as the game continues.
