The Overwatch Contenders Atlantic Showdown has been underway the past couple days in Krefield, Germany. This is a double-elimination tournament featuring the top teams from this past season’s North American, European and South American Contenders regions. The action all comes to a close today with the finals of the lower bracket and the proceeding Grand Finals. The winning team will take home a prize purse of $50,000.
Who is Playing and How Can I Watch?
The last day of action in Krefield begins at 8:00 am PDT with the lower bracket finals, pitting North America’s Team Envy against Europe’s very own Angry Titans. Immediately following the conclusion of this match, the winner will play in the Grand Finals versus NA Powerhouse, Fusion University. FU has yet to lose a game at the Atlantic Showdown, beating both of the teams they would be potentially facing in the Grand Finals. They did so only dropping one map across both series.
The games will all be streamed on the Overwatch Contenders Twitch channel, with live updates coming through the Overwatch Path to Pro Twitter account. The matches will be cast by the duos of Connor “Avast” Prince & Andrew “ZP” Rush and Harry “Legday” Pollitt & Jack “Jaws” Wright, and will be hosted by Ana Xisdê.
More Than Pride (and Cash) on the Line
There is a lot still on the line in the Atlantic Showdown. For the winning team, there is an opportunity to earn their region an additional spot in the Gauntlet, a tournament in October that combines the 10 best teams from across the globe. With a potential NA vs EU Grand Finals looming, this could be a very important battle, not only for regional bragging rights but for representation at the Gauntlet.
On the opposite side of things, EU and SA each lost their regions a spot in the Gauntlet due to British Hurricane and Lowkey Esports placing 5th and 6th in the Atlantic Showdown. For SA, this means that they will not be fielding a team at the Gauntlet, while EU moves from two teams down to one.
To see if Angry Titans are able to rally and reclaim EU’s second spot in the Gauntlet, be sure and tune in bright and early at 8:00 am PDT for their lower finals matchup against Team Envy.
