On Tuesday the San Jose Sharks snapped the Detroit Red Wings’ seven-game win streak with a 6-3 victory. The win ends the Sharks’ own streak of three losses. Team Teal’s last win was against New Jersey in early January (3-2).
San Jose swept the Red Wings 2-0 in the regular-season series, including a 5-4 overtime win back in November. Their victory also stopped the Red Wings from going on an eight-game win streak.
Game Recap
Opening scoring for the Sharks was Jan Rutta just 1:45 into the period. The defenseman’s wrist shot was assisted by Will Smith and Alexander Wennberg.
Detroit had an opportunity to tie the game when Mario Ferraro was called for holding. Special teams pulled through, and the Sharks maintained their 1-0 lead.
To close the first period, Nico Sturm put a wrister past Detroit goaltender Ville Husso. Earning assists for the short-handed play were William Eklund and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.
This was Vlasic’s second assist in the last three games since returning to the Sharks’ lineup. The veteran defenseman last played in April 2023 before going on injured reserve during the 2023-24 season.
In the second, Vladimir Tarasenko made it 2-1, Red Wings with a snapshot assisted by Simon Edvinsson and Jonatan Berggren.
Minutes later, the Sharks successfully killed another penalty after Ty Dellandrea was called for tripping.
In the final period, Eklund restored the Sharks’ two-goal lead with a wrister. This marks Eklund’s third goal in his last four games. Macklin Celebrini and Tyler Toffoli picked up assists.
Tarasenko scored his second against Sharks’ goalie Alexandar Georgiev, with assists from Erik Gustafsson and Michael Rasmussen. The forward’s snapshot brought Detroit back within one again, making it 3-2.
Seconds later, Sharks got a power-play opportunity that they capitalized on. Mikael Granlund put a backhander past Husso, with Celebrini and Toffoli each picking up assists again. This was Granlund’s 13th power-play goal.
Detroit’s Dylan Larkin set up Lucas Raymond for a wrist-shot goal, but seconds later, the Sharks attacked again.
Midway through the third, Celebrini’s play gave Detroit’s Justin Holl a chance to clear the puck, but Toffoli intercepted. Seconds later, Eklund assisted on Toffoli’s wrister, making it 5-3.
Ferraro scored the last goal of the night with an empty-netter late in the third, making the final score 6-3, Sharks.
Highlights
Despite being outshot 28-24, the Sharks capitalized on their chances. Their power play was perfect, converting their only opportunity, while the Red Wings went 0-for-2.
Team Teal’s defense was also committed, blocking 18 shots compared to Detroit’s nine.
Cody Ceci shut down Detroit’s scoring chances, contributing four blocked shots, a takeaway, and finishing +3 over 21:06 of ice time.
Granlund logged one of the highest ice times among Sharks forwards at 18:14. With Detroit unable to convert on their two power-play chances, his goal gave the Sharks’ special teams an edge.
Defenseman Jake Walman returned to Detroit for the first time since being traded to the Sharks. Facing his former team in a solid performance, Walman contributed five blocked shots, one takeaway, and a +3 rating.
The Sharks displayed variety on the scoresheet, with contributions from both seasoned veterans and emerging young players.
Off to a strong start for their five-game road trip, the Sharks take on the Columbus Blue Jackets next.
