The New York Rangers shutout the Winnipeg Jets 3-0. This is their third consecutive shutout win. The Rangers haven’t accomplished such a feat since 1973. Here is how the game went down.
Sluggish First Period
There really wasn’t much action in the first period. There were some good chances on goal, but there were only a total of 15 shots on goal (SOG).
Some hits did take place as there were 19 total, 11 for the Jets and eight for the Rangers. Something needs to happen in the second period.
The Rangers are looking to keep up and pass the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes beat the Arizona Coyotes Monday night by a score of 5-3. With a win tonight, the Rangers will tie the Hurricanes in points.
Will the Rangers up their game in the second period? Not at first.
Jets Surging, but Here Comes the Rangers
The Jets started the period hot, getting many chances and shooting the puck early on.
The Rangers were looking slow to start, but did pick things up at around the halfway point.
The total SOG still favored the Rangers, 14-12 and they also scored on the PP.
The PP came about when Morgan Barron received a high sticking call against Filip Chytil. Once the Rangers were in their offensive zone, Artemi Panarin (69) passed it to Mika Zibanejad (50), who then made a phenomenal pass to Ryan Strome (18). Strome deflected it into the net to make it 1-0.
The Rangers were more physical this period with 10 hits to the Jets three.
A Close Game
This game really could go either way with both teams having great chances. Fortunately for the Rangers, they added to their lead.
At 11:47, Adam Fox (11) scored on his wrist shot to make it 2-0. The puck was in the zone for awhile, mostly because of Panarin (70). He was like a puck magnet, the puck was always finding him. Panarin and Andrew Copp (31) assisted on the play.
With just over three minutes left in the game, the Jets took out their goalie since they were down by two. The Rangers scored another on Strome’s (19) empty-netter with only 33 seconds left. Strome tied his career high in goals. Copp and Chris Kreider (23) got the assists.
The final score of the game was 3-0, the Rangers third straight shutout. This was the first time the Rangers had three consecutive shutouts since 1973.
Upcoming Schedule
The Rangers will be facing the New York Islanders on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. This will be their fourth matchup this season, as the Rangers are looking to even the series. The Islanders won the last two games between these cross-town rivals, while the Rangers won their first in late November 2021.
The Islanders are eliminated from the playoffs and look to take the series against the Rangers. Will they succeed? Or will the Rangers continue their run to keep people talking, putting themselves in the position to be one of the best teams of 2021-2022 season? Watch the game to find out.
