The Cowboys last season surprisingly had one of the best offenses in the league. The Cowboys ranked both first in total yards with 6,904 and yards per game with 431.5. They also ranked fifth-most in rushing yards with 2,513, sixth most in points with 434 and second in passing yards with 4,751.
The wide receiver pairs of Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup were unstoppable last year for the Cowboys. Cooper ended the season with 1,189 receiving yards, while Gallup ended the season with 1,107 receiving yards. This is the first time a Cowboys pair of wide receivers totaled more than 1,000 yards a season since 2006, ESPN Reports.
With the addition of CeeDee Lamb from the 2020 NFL draft, the Cowboys just doubled their offensive power. Cooper strongly believes that the trio of Lamb, Cooper and Gallup can each have a 1,000 plus receiving yards season, making the Cowboys offense more dangerous than last season.
“I think it was a great pickup,” Cooper said about drafting Lamb in the first round, according to ESPN. “You have to draft the best player on the board. Everybody understands that. He’s a great receiver. I think with me and Michael Gallup going for 1,000 yards last season, the expectations is to have three 1,000 yard receivers this year.”
Lamb this year will see a lot of time playing in the slot. Because most defenses will focus most of their attention on Cooper and Gallup, it will leave a lot of room for Lamb to get open. Opposing teams’ defenses will see a lot of difficulties trying to defend all three receivers.
The Cowboys were very smart to acquire a wide receiver in the first round of the draft. Lamb was remarkably one of the best wide receivers in the draft, which led to the Cowboys choosing him.
Dallas Cowboys COO Stephen Jones spoke about the future of the Cowboys’ offense and how Cowboys fans will be happy to see how the three wide receivers can produce a lot of success for the Cowboys this season. “We feel so good about this team” said Jones in an interview with Sports Illustrated. “But I must say, with jumping on CeeDee Lamb in the first round, that this receiving corps is going to be something else”.
The trio of wide receivers will be in Dallas for the next few years to come, maybe even longer. Cooper recently signed a huge five-year, $100 million-dollar deal back in March, while Gallup signed a four-year, $3.52 million dollar deal in 2018. The Cowboys also signed Lamb to a rookie contact of four-years $14.01-million dollar rookie contract.
The Washington Football team had actually offered Cooper an even bigger deal. However, Cooper chose to take the deal from the Cowboys instead. “I just liked everything about being a Dallas Cowboy” said Cooper to ESPN. “Just the atmosphere both in the building and outside the building in terms of the city of Dallas and surrounding areas-I guess that would be the same reason why I was willing to take less money to stay here.”
The trio has been training together with Prescott and other Cowboys players at Prescott’s football field in his backyard. Cooper says that they have been running routes, offensive plays and doing other training workouts.
Lamb in the offseason has built chemistry with his new teammates that will help the Cowboys offense tremendously this season. The Cowboys are coming into this season with high expectations and a lot of pressure to make it into the playoffs.
As preseason camps continue and the season starting in just over a month, we can expect to see a lot of success coming from the trio of wide receivers for the Cowboys this season that Cowboys fans will love to look forward to.
