Everyone is excited about the receivers that will be on this Philadelphia Eagles team this year, mainly the duo of DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown. However, there is another receiver on the roster that has all the talent necessary to turn heads going into his third in the NFL. His name is Quez Watkins. This article will tell everything about how Watkins can potentially have his best season.
Watkins during his Rookie season
Watkins did not get much playing time during his rookie year with the Eagles. Although when he did get on the field, he made the most of it. Watkins had 106 yards receiving and one touchdown. It is not about his yardage or the number of touchdowns he had, but it is what he did when he got the ball. Watkins got big chunk plays every time he caught the ball that year. Watkins had 15 yards a catch and converted four first downs for the Eagles. The point being is that he showed the explosiveness he possesses in his short time on the field in 2020.
His second year in the NFL
Fast Forward to 2021, Watkins got a lot more playing time because of those glimpses of greatness during his rookie season. In a season, where the Eagles mostly ran the ball for a big chunk of it, Watkins put up some impressive numbers for a sixth-round draft pick. He racked up over 600 yards and one touchdown. Watkins found a way to move the ball for the Eagles. He converted 25 first downs for this team and still had 15 yards a catch on 43 receptions. His longest reception was 91 yards, which does not happen every weekend. This was against the 49ers in a Week two game. The Eagles were backed up in their own end-zone.
It shows how Watkins can change a drive in just one play. In addition, he is reliable he caught more than half of his targets and doesn’t turn the ball over. Watkins has more yardage than Jalen Reagor in his first two seasons who was a first-round draft pick in 2020.
What Watkins can do in 2022
All signs are looking like Quez Watkins will be a starter in 2022 for the Eagles. He should be the third receiver behind Devonta Smith and A.J Brown. Expect him to be explosive and to show off his blazing speed this coming year. The Eagles should focus on going his way when they need a big chunk of yardage as he is a deep threat.
The one thing that Watkins needs to improve on this coming season is scoring. He only has two touchdowns in his first two seasons, which is honestly hard to believe. His speed should make him a threat running those quick slant routes near the end-zone. Screen passes could even work in that area of the field as Watkins can avoid defenders easily. In conclusion, Watkins should have a great year in 2022 even with elite receivers in the lineup. Expect him to improve on his yardage from 2021 and hopefully score more touchdowns.
