The Eagles battled the New England Patriots in their second preseason game last Thursday night. Jalen Hurts was supposed to start a couple of series in this game. However, he came down with an Illness right before the game and instead went to the hospital to get checked out. This means that Joe Flacco did start for the Eagles Thursday night. The Eagles fans also got their first look at Heisman winner Devonta Smith, which was one of the few positives that came out of this game. The Eagles got absolutely blown out of the water in this game. They lost 35-0 in a poor showing in front of the Eagles faithful. This article will be a Preseason game recap on the Philadelphia Eagles vs the New England Patriots.
The Eagles offense looked rough
Both of the backup quarterbacks did not put on good performances. Flacco looked inaccurate at times, which really didn’t give the receivers much of a chance to make plays. He ended up throwing for 83 yards and had one interception. Nick Mullens again looked awful during this game. He only completed five of his 15 pass attempts. He also only threw for 27 yards and one interception.
The turnovers were one of the key parts to the Eagles losing this game and it wasn’t just the quarterbacks. Backup center Nate Herbig snapped  the ball over Flacco’s head early into the game. This bad snap ended up in amounting for seven points for the Patriots, as they got the ball in the red zone.
Running and Receiving
The Eagles are still not doing much in the running game. Miles Sanders and Boston Scott are not getting many carries during this preseason. This is alarming since they are still both young and need more reps to be top notch during the regular season. Elijah Holyfield was the leading rusher in this game. He showed off some good quickness with his five carries in this game. Holyfield also got a 20-yard run, which was the only significant play in the running game during the game. He ended the night with 31 yards.
As said above the receivers didn’t really get a chance to shine, with the bad quarterback play. The only bright spot was DeVonta Smith. His route running and speed looked great during the game. He did drop a couple of passes early on, but that’s just nerves with playing your first game in the NFL. He ended the night with two receptions for 19 yards. Another impressive player that has a great opportunity to make the Eagles roster is tight end Jack Stoll. He has great hands for a big guy and he makes the imposing defense work to bring him down. He was the top receiver with 33 yards.
Defense showed bright spots but still needs work
The player of the game for the defense has to be Alex Singleton. He fly’s around the field and always seemed to be involved in plays. Singleton is also amazing when it comes to reading plays and getting to where he needs to be to make a tackle. He had five solo  tackles with one being for a loss. If he could  have gotten more playing time, he would have easily had 10 or more tackles by the end of the night.
Eagle’s rookie cornerback Zek McPhearson was targeted a whole lot during this game. It seemed like the receivers always found a way to catch the ball against him. He did always make his tackles and stop the receivers for a minimal gain after the catch. He had nine total tackles with five of them being solo tackles.
The defensive line did not look great against the rush. It seemed like the Patriots running backs got five or more yards a run. In the Eagles defense , the Patriots do tout one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. The Eagles also played a lot of there backups during the game, which is also can be a factor.
Overall this is a game to forget for the Eagles. It is good that it was only a preseason game and that it didn’t count for the regular season. The Eagles have one more game against the New York Jets on Friday. Hopefully they will put up more of a fight in the Meadowlands. This was the Philadelphia Eagles preseason game recap against the New England Patriots.
