The Green Bay Packers are reportedly signing wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Green Bay is reportedly paying Watkins up to $4 million on a one-year contract.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the news via Twitter on Thursday afternoon.
The Packers are in desperate need of a wide receiver after one of the best in the league, Davante Adams, was lost in a trade. Adams had 123 catches and over 1,500 yards plus 11 touchdowns last season as Rodgers’ first option. That production has to be replaced, as well as the production of speedster Marquez Valdez-Scantling, who went to the Chiefs.
Watkins played in 13 games (nine starts) last year with the Baltimore Ravens. He had just 27 catches for 394 yards and one touchdown in 2021. These numbers were similar to, but slightly below, his 2020 seasons, when he had 421 yards and two touchdowns in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes.
Green Bay will certainly have to draft more wide receiver talent in the 2022 NFL Draft, but Watkins is at least a start in trying to replace Adams’ production. They now have Watkins, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and second-year player Amari Rodgers as their featured wideouts.
