Before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers divisional-round game against the Los Angeles Rams, there was speculation about Brady possibly retiring at the conclusion of the Buccaneers’ playoff run regardless of the outcome. After the game when asked about a potential retirement Brady said he would need some time to think about his future because he was only focused on the game he had previously played.
Since the initial reports of Brady’s potential retirement, there has been some pushback reputing the reports by Buccaneers reporter Rick Stroud and NFL reporter Michael Silver that he doesn’t intend to retire yet. Their reports state that Brady nor his agent had told the Buccaneers that he intended to retire.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport clarified the denial reports stating that even though the reports feel to be denying his potential retirement, it has not been clearly denied that he will retire. Rapoport talked to those close to Brady who says he will retire and the reason why he has not stated yet is more of a timing issue rather than him still considering the decision. Brady throughout his career has made major announcements in the ways he sees fit.
If the claims are true that Brady is to retire it will be the conclusion of one of if not the greatest career in NFL history. As it currently stands Brady is first in NFL history in completions, pass attempts, passing yards, passing touchdowns, quarterback starts, quarterback wins, Pro Bowl nods, Super Bowl wins, Super Bowl appearances, and Super Bowl MVPs. Brady spent the first twenty years of his career as a member of the New England Patriots and the last two with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is a seven time Super Bowl champion which is more than any franchise in the league. He was a part of all six of the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl victories and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Super Bowl victory last offseason.
Along with his Super Bowl victories Brady has an outstanding resume. He is the only player in NFL history to have been voted to 15 Pro Bowls. Brady is also a three time First Team All-Pro and three time MVP. He won Offensive Player of the Year twice (2007 & 2010) and Comeback Player of the Year in 2009. Brady led the league is passing touchdowns five times and passing yards four times. He had achieved both feats this past season. Brady also led the league in passer rating and completion percentage twice in his career.
For what he has done during the course of his career Brady was named to the NFL 2000’s All-Decade Team along with the NFL 2010’s All-Decade Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary Team. Very soon he will be able to add First Ballot Hall of Famer to his list of accomplishments.
Brady will be putting an end to not only one of the greatest careers in the history of sports but one of the greatest underdog stories of all-time. The New England Patriots took Brady with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. At best they had hoped that Brady would have became a very good backup. The team held onto Brady his rookie season as a fourth quarterback on the roster which is extremely uncommon. They ended up landing their starter for the next 19 seasons before he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 offseason.
