The Houston Texans have hired San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as head coach according to ESPN’s Adama Schefter. He has agreed to a six-year deal.
Ryans started his coaching career with the 49ers in 2017 as a defensive quality control coach. He worked his way up to inside linebackers coach and eventually to defensive coordinator in 2021. Ryans helped the team be the top defense in the league for the 2022 season.
As a player in the NFL, Ryans was a two-time Pro Bowler who spent time with the Texans and Eagles.
In Houston, Ryans will take over a team that won just three games in 2022. The Texans have been rebuilding over the last several years and have fired their last two head coaches after one season. They have the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
