The Carolina Panthers will release safety Eric Reid according to Jeff Darlington.
Slight surprise in Charlotte: The Panthers will be releasing safety Eric Reid, source says. Team saw him as a great culture fit, ownership/management really liked him, all seemed well. But team decided to instead go a different way at safety in free agency.

Reid, 28, is a seven-year veteran who played five years with the 49ers and the last two with the Panthers. Last season, he had 131 total tackles and six passes defended. In his career, he has 519 total tackles and 45 passes defended.
The Panthers have Tre Boston at safety, but will now likely need to get him help on the backend of the defense before the season starts.
