According to rumors circulating in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills are planning on abandoning Buffalo to move to Austin Texas.
The news of this dropped just hours after the Buffalo Bills owners, Terry and Kim Pegula, asked the city for a new stadium, with the project that is fully funded by public taxes.
“Preliminary talks have begun between the owners of the Buffalo Bills, the State of New York, and Erie County as officials consider a pitch by the team to build a new NFL stadium. In fact, it’s one of the largest asks for public money in pro sports stadium negotiations: Pegula Sports and Entertainment, the team’s owners, have pitched a $1.5 billion proposal for a new stadium in Orchard Park.” BN (Buffalo News) reported earlier today.
$1.1B will go to the Bills and the construction of their new stadium in Orchard Park. The rest would go to the Buffalo Sabres, the professional hockey team in the NHL also owned by the Pegulas, according to the sources of the BN.
Now it seems Bill ownership is taking negotiations to the next level, by threatening to leave the city. made a note to the local government that other cities would pay big money to have an NFL team relocated to them.
ESPN’s, Seth Wickersham, also reported that “Austin is a possible destination—or threat—as one of the “other cities elsewhere that desire an NFL franchise and would pay handsomely for it.”
Other NFL teams have moved cities in recent years. In January 2020, the Raiders announced their move from Los Angeles to Las Vegas before the previous season. The Bills might soon join them in a new trend of switching cities.
At the moment, however, it’s still too early to call what the owners will do.
