Evans played at both TCU and Ole Miss during his three-year college career. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As a five-star prospect, Evans decided to stay in the state and play for TCU. He had 415 rushing yards, 76 receiving yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman. The Horned Frogs were able to go 6-4 that season. The following season, Evans totaled 648 rushing yards, 130 receiving yards and six total touchdowns. TCU struggled with a 5-7 record. He then decided to transfer to Ole Miss for the 2022 season where he had 936 rushing yards, 119 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns. Ole Miss went 8-5 with Evans’s help.
Following an appearance in the Texas Bowl, Evans declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.
Zach Evans Strengths
Evans has the size of a running back that can handle a heavy workload. He stands at 5-foot-11 and 202 pounds. His size gives him a decent amount of power. He has solid contact balance, which is also a product of his play strength. He can be trusted to pick up first downs in short-yardage situations.
He has good athleticism for the running back position. Evans has good burst at the start of the play and the ability to start and stop. He shows good agility to make defenders miss. Evans is a home run threat, as he can take routine carries all the way to the end zone.
Evans has decent vision for the position. He shows the ability to react quickly when he needs to reroute his run. Evans finds open space and is able to get to it in the open field. He is specifically good at finding holes in zone-blocking schemes.
Zach Evans Weaknesses
NFL teams drafting Evans will have to look into his injury history. He missed plenty of games over his college career due to nagging injuries. His durability will come into question, even if he does have the frame that should be able to carry a big workload.
Evans needs to show better ball security. He had too many fumbles, especially for a player that was in backfields that split the work. Evans will need to make sure he carries the ball high and tight to prevent any further fumbling issues.
While he does have some agility, he could be more elusive. He doesn’t have great juke moves to make defenders miss and tries to beat defenders with his speed and power. There are times when he could be more creative as a runner, especially at the second level or in the openfield.
Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fourth Round Pick
Draft Grade: Third-Round Pick
