The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Tyler Smith 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Tyler Smith Background
Position:Â Offensive Tackle
Size:Â 6-foot-5, 324 pounds
Class:Â Redshirt Sophomore
2021 stats:Â All-AAC Second Team
Smith only played a little over two seasons with Tulsa, but became one of the best offensive linemen in his conference. He is now one of the better tackle prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Out of high school, Smith was a three-star prospect out of Texas who decided to leave the state to sign with Tulsa. He redshirted his first season on campus, but played in the last four games and started two of them at left tackle. Smith started all nine games at left tackle in 2020 and was a Freshman All-American. Tulsa went 6-3 with an appearance in the Armed Forces Bowl to end the season. He returned at left tackle for Tulsa in 2021 and was a Second Team All-AAC player. The Golden Hurricanes went 7-6 with a win over Old Dominion in the Myrtle Beach Bowl to cap off the season.
After his redshirt sophomore season, Smith decided to take his talents to the next level. He is currently projected to be a first or second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Tyler Smith Strengths
Smith has the necessary measurables to be a solid tackle in the NFL. He is 6-foot-5 and 324 pounds with a well-filled-out frame. There won’t be much work he has to do on his body once getting to the next level. With his size comes solid 34-inch arms, which helps him control his blocks.
As a run blocker, Smith excels. He is able to move defenders completely out of the way to open up big holes for a running back. His power helps him move people, but he also has the movement abilities to get to the second level and complete blocks on linebackers. He is a pro-ready run blocker.
His strength and power help him in several areas. He can sustain blocks in the running game. In pass protection, he has a good anchor and doesn’t get pushed off of his spot. Both his strength and power are shown through his tough demeanor.
Tyler Smith Weaknesses
He needs to improve his hand usage and placement. Smith needs to get his hands on defenders early in the rep to establish a good start. He has good pop in his hands and can slow down defenders that way. Currently, his hands get too wide, which limits their effectiveness.
Smith can pick up his fair share of penalties. He picked up too many holding penalties and his aggressive demeanor could hold him back, as much as it helps him. In the NFL, Smith will need to play more disciplined football to prevent from hurting his team.
His balance can also be improved. He can have his feet too wide and his base is off because of it. Also, he can lunge at times and then lose the rep because of it. Smith needs to stay patient and stay on balance to prevent being beaten.
