The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Travis Jones 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Travis Jones Background
Position:Â Defensive Lineman
Size:Â 6-foot-4, 325 pounds
Class:Â Redshirt Junior
2021 stats:Â 48 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks
Jones was one of the bright spots of UConn football over the last few seasons. He is now preparing for the NFL Draft.
Out of high school, Jones was a three-star recruit who chose to stay in-state to play for the Huskies. He started as a freshman for UConn, registering 46 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. The Huskies struggled and won just one game. Jones improved as a sophomore with six tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. UConn’s bad team play continued, as they won just two games in 2019. The 2020 season was canceled for UConn due to COVID. Jones returned for the 2021 season. He tallied 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. UConn failed to win a game during the season, despite Jones being a great player.
Following a good individual career, Jones is becoming a pro. He is currently projected to be a day two pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Travis Jones Strengths
Jones has great size for an interior defensive lineman at the NFL level. He stands at 6-foot-4 and 325 pounds, which makes him one of the bigger ones in the draft class. Jones also has long arms that measured over 34 inches. He knows how to use his length to win his matchups against offensive linemen.
His strength allows him to do several things well. He takes on double teams and can win his one-on-one matchups because he is too strong to be blocked in one on one situations. Jones can anchor well and has a good bull rush.
He is a better run defender at this point of his career than he is a pass rusher. Jones is able to control gaps against the run. He makes running backs bounce runs outside and his disruption helps other players come to the ball and make plays. This also applies to when he is double-teamed, as other players are able to get to the ball carrier.
Travis Jones Weaknesses
Jones isn’t the quickest player, even for his size. He has an average first step at the snap of the ball, which can sometimes give an offensive lineman an early edge. Jones isn’t a player who can win in gaps based on quickness either, as most of his game is built on his strength.
There are times when Jones loses some of his power because he has too high of a pad level. He needs to keep his leverage by staying low, which is sometimes hard given his height. If he can stay low, his power will become even more effective.
Jones can add more pass-rushing moves to his arsenal to become a better pass rusher. He uses a good bull rush to push the pocket, but he needs to work on his hand fighting in order to shed and get to the quarterback. Jones is still an asset in pass-rushing situations because he can take up multiple blockers, but could get to the quarterback more himself
