The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Perrion Winfrey 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Perrion Winfrey Background
Position:Â Defensive Lineman
Size:Â 6-foot-4, 290 pounds
Class:Â Senior
2021 stats:Â 23 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble
Winfrey only spent two seasons at Oklahoma, but made an impact. Now, he is taking his talents to the next level as a prospect in the NFL Draft.
Out of high school, Winfrey went to Junior College. He played at Iowa Western for two seasons before signing with Oklahoma as one of the best JUCO players in the country. For the 2020 season, Winfrey registered 5.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks for the Sooners. As an All-Big-12 Second Team selection, he helped Oklahoma go 9-2 with a win in the Cotton Bowl over Florida. He improved his play in 2021 with 11 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Oklahoma went 11-2 with a win over Oregon in the Alamo Bowl to cap of the season.
Following two seasons for the Sooners, Winfrey is heading to the NFL. He is currently projected to be a day two draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Perrion Winfrey Strengths
Winfrey is extremely quick for a defensive lineman. At the snap of the ball, he is routinely one of the fastest people to get out of his stance, which gives him a distinct advantage. On top of that, he is quicker than most linemen, so he can carry that good start to the play into the gaps and really put pressure on an offensive line, who will have to catch up to him.
He showed the ability to make plays against the run during his college career. Winfrey attacks gaps quickly, which can disrupt a running play almost instantly. He can shed, then pursue the ball carrier well. After he gets to the ball carrier, he shows good tackling ability. A lot of times he is able to make a tackle behind the line of scrimmage.
His motor is also very good. He shows effort throughout a game. Winfrey can be seen tracking down ball carriers way down the field. As a pass rusher, he doesn’t give up on a play, even if seconds have elapsed and he hasn’t made much progress.
Perrion Winfrey Weaknesses
Winfrey is a little undersized for an interior defensive lineman. He weighed in at 292 pounds at the NFL Combine. With his lack of size, he can get pushed around a bit in the running game and can sometimes struggle to shed and get to the quarterback. He’ll need to add strength to help hold up against bigger and stronger interior offensive linemen.
He was misused at Oklahoma, as he was often asked to line up at nose tackle. His production probably suffered and he also got limited reps as a 4-3 defensive tackle, which is where he will be playing most of his reps at the NFL level.
While he makes plays against the run, he did so mostly by attacking gaps. In the NFL, he may be seen as more of a pass-rushing defensive tackle because he is smaller and attacking the gaps may not work as well against NFL offensive linemen who can control their blocks a little better. Adding strength will help him hold up against the run a little better.
Projected Draft Range:Â Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
