The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Luke Musgrave 2023 NFL Draft Profile.
Luke Musgrave Background
Position: Tight End
School: Oregon State
Size: 6-foot-6, 253 pounds
Class: Senior
2022 Stats: 11 receptions, 169 receiving yards, 1 touchdown reception (2 games played)
Musgrave wasn’t able to play a lot in the 2022 college football season, but still did enough in his collegiate career to get some recognition. He is now in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As a three-star recruit out of Oregon, Musgrave decided to stay in-state and play for the Beavers. After notching two receptions for 18 yards as a freshman, he improved to have 12 catches for 142 yards as a sophomore. Oregon State went 2-5 in a COVID-shortened season. The following season, Musgrave again increased his production with 22 catches for 304 yards and one touchdown. His play helped the Beavers to improve to a 7-6 record in 2021. He was only able to play in two games during the 2022 season due to a knee injury, but registered 11 catches for 169 yards and a touchdown.
Following the injury that cut his last season short, Musgrave declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is a projected day-two pick.
Luke Musgrave Strengths
Musgrave has solid size for the tight end position at 6-foot-6 and 253 pounds. With this comes average, but not great, play strength, which he is still figuring out how to use to his advantage. He also has ok arm length, helping him to give him a pretty decent catch radius. His size really helps him to be a matchup problem for defensive backs.
Especially for his size, Musgrave is a good athlete. He has been clocked running over 20 mph at the Senior Bowl with pads on. His 4.61-second 40-yard dash is good, but it also shows up on tape. Not only does he have good straight-line speed, Musgrave has the ability to change direction well and has loose hips.
He is one of the better route runners in this year’s tight end class. His agility helps him change direction quickly, which makes him tough for defenders to keep up with in man coverage. He gets in and out of the breaks in his route pretty quickly. Against zone coverage, he is able to recognize it and then find the soft spot in the zone to get open. He is a quarterback-friendly target.
Luke Musgrave Weaknesses
Especially given that he has solid size, Musgrave could be a way more effective blocker. He has shown decent effort, but struggles to sustain blocks. Musgrave has the tools to be turned into a decent blocker, but will have to develop that skill in the NFL.
As mentioned, Musgrave is still learning how to use his strength. Figuring that out will help him in the run game, but could also help him be a more physical receiver. Musgrave can use his body better to clear space as a receiver to make himself more effective.
Although he is a senior, Musgrave doesn’t have tons of starting experience or production. He only played two games as a freshman and Oregon State’s schedule was limited to just seven games in 2020 due to COVID. Add in the fact that he only played two games last season with a knee injury and Musgrave really didn’t play as much as other tight ends in the class. The important thing is that he is healthy now, but Musgrave could’ve produced more with more opportunities at the collegiate level.
Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
Draft Grade: Second Round Pick
