Murray was rated as a four-star recruit on some sites and a three-star recruit by others heading into Oklahoma. This didn’t slow him down at all, as he went on to have a great career for the Sooners before heading to the NFL Draft.

He started for Oklahoma as a freshman and had 68 total tackles. The Sooners went to the College Football Playoff and won 12 games that season. When Murray was a sophomore, he took the college football world by storm with 155 total tackles. Oklahoma again won 12 games and made the College Football Playoff. This past season, Oklahoma had the same results with 12 wins and a College Football Playoff appearance. Murray was a star once again with 102 total tackles.

After tackling everyone in sight over the last three years for Oklahoma, Murray decided to declare for the 2020 NFL Draft. He will be one of the first linebackers selected and could even go in the first round.

Strengths

The amount of range that Murray can cover is impressive. He is a sideline to sideline linebacker who can make plays even if it is directed away from him. His speed will give him a chance to not only make plays, but to stay on the field for three downs. This also helps him keep up in coverage and when he is a spy against athletic quarterbacks.

Murray is a tackle machine. He has a nose for the ball and the range to go make the play on the ball carrier. Once he gets to the ball carrier, Murray has good tackling form. Murray hardly ever misses tackles, making him a reliable player in that regard. His 155 total tackles as a sophomore are impressive and his skills should translate to the NFL in that area.

His zone coverage is solid, as he reads the quarterbacks’ eyes. He is able to have a great feel for where receivers are around him, while keeping his eyes locked on the quarterback. Murray’s speed also helps with this as he can go make plays on the ball when it is thrown to receivers around his zone.

Weaknesses

Murray’s awareness can be much improved. He is very aggressive and goes with his first instinct, but this leaves him vulnerable against misdirections and trick plays. This leaves him out of position and allows offenses to generate big plays. He needs to be better at recognizing what offenses are doing instead of just chasing the ball.

He will need to add a little more strength for the next level. Murray isn’t necessarily weak, but adding more strength will help him shed blockers better, which should help improve his run defense. This will help him make plays even faster at the NFL level.

His ability to blitz and get to the quarterback is impressive, as offensive lines scramble to block him. He does need to add more pass-rushing moves, as he struggles to get by blockers if he is picked up. If teams blitz him on third down now, solid offensive lines with good communication will be able to stop him.
