Joe Burrow 2020 NFL Draft Profile

The 2020 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. The Game Haus will be doing scouting reports on some of the top prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft. LSU quarterback Joe Burrow had one of the best seasons ever for a college football player and is now a highly sought-after prospect.

Position: Quarterback

Class: Redshirt Senior

Size: 6-foot-4, 215 pounds

2019 stats: 5,671 passing yards, 60 touchdowns, six interceptions, 76.3 percent completion

Burrow had to wait his turn before seeing the field in college, but once he finally did, he showed how much talent he had. He is a fifth-year senior and now that his eligibility is exhausted, Burrow is getting ready for the NFL.

Although he is known for his play at LSU, Burrow started his career at Ohio State. He redshirted his first year on campus in 2015, then played in a limited capacity over the next two seasons. In the spring before the 2018 season, Burrow lost the starting quarterback job to Dwayne Haskins, who went on to set Big Ten records. Burrow decided to grad-transfer to LSU for his remaining two years of eligibility. In 2018, Burrow started all games and led the team to 10 wins, including a victory over UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. For his last year of eligibility, LSU changed their offense to open things up. It worked, as Burrow had a great season and the Tigers won the National Championship.

After 2018, Burrow was projected to be a mid-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Because he played so well in 2019, his draft stock has skyrocketed. Now, Burrow is projected to be one of the best players in the class and the number one overall pick.

Burrow’s greatest strength is his accuracy. It is something he really improved on for his last season of football, but there were always flashes of that beforehand. His accuracy extends to all areas of the field as he continually puts the ball right where it needs to be for receivers to run after the catch. He throws very accurate deep balls as well.

His pocket presence is up there with some of the greatest prospects of all time. Burrow feels the pressure and has a good mental clock of when it will be getting to him. He knows how to maneuver around the pocket and can even leave the pocket to avoid pressure and extend plays.

He has great decision-making skills that were on full display over the last two seasons. At LSU, he threw just 11 interceptions over his two years starting. For the number of throws he made, especially in his last season, that is incredible. This doesn’t mean he won’t take risks, but for the most part, Burrow can be trusted to protect the football.

Although he doesn’t have a weak arm, Burrow will not have great arm strength. Like every other quarterback in the NFL, he can make throws deep down the field, but getting enough zip on the ball on short and intermediate throws could give him some trouble. The longer the ball hangs in the air in the pros, the more likely bad things will happen.

There will be plenty of questions about whether or not Burrow is a system quarterback. He played vastly better in 2019 than he did in 2018. With the offense spread out this year, Burrow was able to survey the whole field and find success. In the years before, Burrow did not find that same success. Offenses will need to tailor their offense to what Burrow can do. With that, people will also if he is a one-year wonder, even if his first season at LSU was good enough to get him some draft consideration too.

Burrow doesn’t have a big frame to work with. He is very skinny for his height, which will bring up questions of whether he can take NFL hits and stay healthy. His toughness is unquestionable, but he’ll want to add some weight to his frame to prevent injury.

Projected Draft Range: Top 5 Pick
