The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Jalen Pitre 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Jalen Pitre Background
Position:Â Safety
Size:Â 5-foot-11, 198 pounds
Class:Â Redshirt Senior
2021 stats:Â 75 total tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 7 passes defended, 3 fumble recoveries, 3 forced fumbles
Pitre was at Baylor for five seasons before exhausting his college eligibility. He is now heading to the next level.
Out of high school, Pitre was a three-star linebacker who stayed in-state to play for Baylor. He started as a freshman and posted 37 total tackles. Following that season, he failed to make a major impact for the next two seasons. He then made the change to safety before the 2020 season. Pitre registered 60 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss and two interceptions in 2020. The Bears had a bad season and finished at 2-7. He fully found his role in the defense as a redshirt season, as he tallied 75 total tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions. Baylor had a great turnaround and won 12 games in 2021 including the Sugar Bowl.
Following a long career in college, Pitre is preparing for the pros. He is currently projected to be a day two pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Jalen Pitre Strengths
Pitre did a great job of improving his awareness during his college years. He truly understands how offenses will attack him. Pitre diagnoses plays quickly. If it is a run play, he sees it and reacts quickly. He also reads the quarterback’s eyes well when playing against the pass.
He did a great job in run support at Baylor. With experience at linebacker, he shows the ability to read where the ball is going and then shed to go make plays. He finishes the play with a good form tackle and helps limit big plays.
In coverage, he is good in underneath zones. He has good eye discipline to read the quarterback’s eyes. Pitre then has the quickness to break and make a play on the ball. His toughness and physicality from the slot make him tough to beat.
Jalen Pitre Weaknesses
Pitre is a little undersized for a player that spent so much time in the box during the last two years of college. At 5-foot-11 and 198 pounds, it is hard to imagine him being a former linebacker. He’ll need to add to his frame if he wants to maintain the same role.
He isn’t the most versatile safety. In college, he played a specialized role as a box safety. He doesn’t have the capabilities to play single or even double-high with a lot of frequency. His best work is done near the line of scrimmage.
His coverage is limited to the slot and near the line of scrimmage. If he gets too far removed from that area, wide receivers are able to separate and beat him. In the NFL, he will be a coverage liability unless he plays underneath zone.
Projected Draft Range:Â Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
