The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Garrett Wilson 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Garrett Wilson Background
Position:Â Wide Receiver
Size:Â 6-foot, 188 pounds
Class:Â Junior
2021 stats:Â 70 receptions, 1,058 receiving yards, 12 touchdowns, 15.1 yards per reception
Wilson was a part of a great wide receiver room at Ohio State over his three seasons. Now, he is headed to the 2022 NFL Draft.
In high school, Wilson developed into a five-star prospect in Texas, but chose to leave the state to play for the Buckeyes. He registered 30 receptions for 432 yards and five touchdowns as a true freshman. His play helped Ohio State make the College Football Playoff. In a shortened COVID season for 2020, Wilson tallied 43 receptions for 723 yards and six touchdowns. The Buckeyes ended up making the National Championship Game that season, but fell short against Alabama. For the 2021 season, Wilson had 70 catches for 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns. Ohio State went 10-2 with a Rose Bowl victory on the season, but Wilson opted out of the bowl game.
Following the season, Wilson declared for the draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Garrett Wilson Strengths
Wilson has great route-running ability. He has great releases off the line of scrimmage to help him beat press coverage. Once he gets to a point where he needs to make a break in his route, he gets in and out quickly, which helps him find open space against man coverage. He is also able to find the soft spot against zone coverage. Wilson can create separation because of his route-running.
He is a good athlete who is both quick and has long speed. This helps his route-running, as it is hard for a corner to match this. Not only does it help him create that separation, but he is a threat for deep plays because he can outrun defenders.
His ability to hit big plays isn’t limited to deep catches. Wilson also shows a good run after the catch ability. He uses his speed and quickness to evade defenders in the open field. His vision helps him run to open space. Any catch could turn into a big gain for Wilson.
Garrett Wilson Weaknesses
Wilson will need to add more weight to his frame. He mostly faced coverage that was off of the line of scrimmage by a few yards, but he may run into more press coverage in the NFL. In order to beat it more consistently, he’ll need that strength. It will also help him with his run after the catch and his blocking.
During his time at Ohio State Wilson did have some drops. A lot of them were out of his frame and some were focus drop. For the most part he has solid hands, but he’ll want to make sure that he is always a reliable target in the NFL.
There are times when Wilson is frantic with the ball in his hands. He is still very good in this regard, but he has juked himself out and lost his balance. It almost looks like he is trying to hurry things, which gets him a bit out of control. If he stays on his feet, he could be even better after catching the ball.
Projected Draft Range:Â First Round Pick
